Old Posts Carter's Corner
The US Taxpayer is now the de-facto owner of all nuclear waste produced by the industry. The industry pays 1 tenth of one cent for each kilowatt hour of energy produced into the Nuclear Waste Fund. In return the US taxpayer takes responsibility for the transportation, processing, and storage of all high level commercial waste. By definition this includes the "high level" waste of By M. J. Carter

the plant infrastructure itself after the life cycle of the plants.
This isn't opinion. It is the current law of the land.
Perhaps the taxpayer should pay the operators back the funds, with accrued interest, give them back the responsibility for waste and high level plant infrastructure and let them compete with the other forms of energy production.
Repeal the "Nuclear Waste Policy Act" and liquidate the Nuclear Waste Fund; if the nuclear energy industry is as economically efficient as we are told, then there should be no opposition from the nuclear lobby that promoted this law in the first place.
The nuclear energy debate seems to have an overriding focus on the safety issues while leaving the economics in the shadows. If the industry can compete in the market place using reprocessing or whatever other technology available to them then let them have at it. But let us taxpayers off the hook. We didn’t buy into this thing in the first place and handing this bag of crap back to the industry for 60 billion dollars sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
I am willing to give Nuclear Energy a fair shot; but not when the entire industry becomes wholly dependent upon tax payer subsidy in order to be cost competitive.
Waste disposal should be a cost of doing business; not something that is pbutted on to the tax payer.
I have heard nuclear energy pundits claim that new processing methods could reduce the waste volumes by 95 percent; but even an astute high school student should be able to see the implausibility of a 95 percent mbutt to energy conversion rate. Producing proportionately more energy per unit fuel volume is not the same as reducing volume; and it is intellectually dishonest to present it as such when it is understood that it is not.
Folks can twist this anyway they care to; but the issue is the size of the hook the industry has in the tax payer under current law. A hook that unfairly and fundamentally changes the economics of competitive power production.
Let capitalism work; repeal the Nuclear Waste Policy Act, liquidate the Nuclear Waste Fund giving the responsibility for the waste and the waste fund money back to the industry with accrued interest, and let them compete on a level economic playing field against the other alternative forms of energy production.

Old Posts THAILAND
15 years ago this old-timer lost a dearly beloved wife of many years. With a small income, and not too happy with what was happening in the United States, he began to look at more peaceful areas to spend his final days.

He was quite literate with computers and in discussing his future with friends around the world, he found some delightful people in Singapore. He sold his condo in Arizona and arrived in Singapore.

It was an awesome place: no ghettos, few single-family residences, most people living in high-rise apartments. But what was most important was the cleanliness of the place and determination of the Singaporeans to keep it that way! A single gum wrapper tossed away could cost you an extremely expensive fine.

Being very near the equator, the climate was a bit humid but otherwise very livable. And in addition it was an extremely modern place with delicious restaurants, orderly freeways, but above all kindly people.

However, a place this delightful has one drawback: millions of people would like to retire there, but there are already 4 million people living on a small island only 15 miles x 30 miles in area. It takes an act of God for immigration to permit you to stay. Unless you are a professional in a category which Singapore needs, forget it! Immigration will put up with you for as much a three-months and then they will politely tell you to move on.

By teaching English at a private school, this old-timer managed to stay almost a year. Then he forlornly moved across the causeway to southern Malaysia. (Don't tell anyone, but that's not a place where we leave the dog for which we had any affection.)

Anyway, not caring much for Malaysia, he moved north to southern Thailand, where he found a lovely widow, and at his ancient age began another honeymoon. If you'd like to know more, post a reply is this topic or for more privacy post your e-mail address and you'll get a prompt reply to any questions.

Stay well, and it is to be hoped that too many people don't crowd this lovely place.

the old-timer
